Become a Volunteer Driver

Do you have a car?

Would you like to do some extremely valuable community work but don't want to be tied down to a particular day and time?

Our driving service may be for you. It is a very flexible way of helping the community. Some volunteer drivers put aside one morning, afternoon or a day a week, others let us know when they have free time. There is no obligation to accept a drive.

Our clients are mainly older people who would have difficulty in using public transport. They may need to get to hospitals, clinics, day centres or lunch clubs. They pay for the service based on mileage. Without the help of volunteer drivers, many older and infirm people would find life very difficult and they are very grateful for the help they receive. Find out more about our Brighter Futures for Older People Scheme

For you - you don't get paid for the time you give, but we do pay a mileage allowance of 40p a mile to and from your home.  This is not taxable. You may have to wait for up to an hour at a hospital while a client receives treatment, but it is a good way to catch up on your reading! Other places have much shorter waiting times.
